The Challenge
The Production department for the LA Kings views themselves as a service department responsible for chronicling the team, beginning with game presentation and then supporting marketing promotions and even original series such as the team documentary Black & White. They cover every aspect of the team–who they are, who’s joining the team, and what’s exciting about them–and serve as the de facto team historians. Effective data storage underpins their entire mission. Unfortunately, their existing fiber-mounted storage system had only six volumes accessible by the team’s editors, allowing only one concurrent editor at a time. As the organization grew, so did the obstacles to efficient media workflows. Massive storage failures were the final indicators that a new and more performant solution was required.
The Solution
Through industry recommendations, the department made contact with OpenDrives. Expressing their requirements for performance, capacity, and future growth and scalability, they ultimately selected OpenDrives and haven’t looked back. The solution fulfills all their editorial and workflow needs and has the high-performance specifications to handle all of their daily activities. “We put it in, installed it, and didn’t miss a beat,” says Phillip Radke, Senior Editor of the LA Kings Production team.
The Result
Even though the remote workflow capabilities are no longer critical in the waning days of the pandemic, the Production team still takes advantage of the power of remote editorial work. The OpenDrives solution handles as many workflow streams and editors they throw at it, and they use it for all their data storage operations. From a customer-service perspective, they’ve been able to rely on OpenDrives to provide fast and courteous turnaround no matter what the situation has been.
