Let’s look at a few linkups, one between storage companies and another between a storage company and a major data center provider, sandwiched between discussion of products that support CXL for PCIe Gen 5.0.
Spectra Logic, maker of storage systems and management solutions, particularly for long term data retention, and OpenDrives, a manufacturer of enterprise scalable network attached storage (NAS) announced and end-to-end, fully integrated data storage and storage lifecycle management solution. The combined solution integrates OpenDrives high-performance, low-latency primary storage with Spectra Logic’s StorCycle Storage lifecycle Management software. Together the combination of primary and secondary storage combined with a dynamic storage lifecycle management system that puts data and content in the right place when it is needed.
Spectra’s StorCycle identifies and migrates inactive data and finished projects from primary storage to a lower cost tier of storage that can include cloud storage, HDDs or magnetic tape. Open storage standards such as SMB, NFS and LTFS are used in the solution and it reported that installation and configuration can be done in a few hours. By regularly moving older less used data from primary to secondary storage, companies can optimize their use of higher performance and more expensive primary storage and balance their needs for performance and lower cost.
The combination is aimed for managing data in the media and entertainment, high performance computing, education, research, healthcare and government markets.
Astera Labs announced its Aries Compute Express Link (CXL 2.0) Smart Retimer portfolio for low-latency CXL.io connectivity. Smart retimers help overcome signal integrity issues for PCIe 4.0, 5.0 and CXL systems. The company said this solution is being sampled to strategic partners. According to Astera CEO, Jitendra Mohan “ With our expansion into the CXL ecosystem, Astera Labs is…provid(ing) purpose-built solutions that unlock complex heterogenous compute and composable disaggregation system topologies.” Astera Labs has prior experience with PCIe 4.0 and 5.0 interconnects. Note that CXL runs on a PCIe physical layer.
Astera Labs is an early member of the CXL Consortium. The company said that it has collaborated with Intel on a low latency mode it its Aries Smart Retimer portfolio for PCIe connectivity with Intel Xeon Scalable processors. Astera Labs is offering an Equinox product, a plug-and-play Smart Retimer Add-in-Card for PCIe/CXL applications, developed in partnership with Intel for development of PCIe 5.0 systems with Intel’s Xeon Scalable processors. An Equinox PCIe 5.0 Retimer Add-in-Card is shown below.
Pure Storage announced that it was collaborating with international digital infrastructure provider, Equinix, to provide Pure Storage on Equinix Metal, a bare metal as a service storage offering.
According to the company, “Pure Storage on Equinix Metal provides an environment in which physical, dedicated, single tenant servers and high-performance storage can be provisioned to customers with cloud-like ease and speed. The solution can eliminate upfront CAPEX investment for hardware and ongoing stack management by embedding storage and simple, on-demand procurement of network, storage and compute, with hosting, deployment, and support of all physical aspects via one vendor, under one contract. The solution can also lower operational costs and risks, and allows for more flexible, scalable, as a service delivery of IT infrastructure, empowering organizations to only pay for what they use, when they want to use it.”
Solutions enabled by this partnering include: hybrid cloud and data recovery as a service for virtual environment, high performance, near-edge cloud storage and hybrid and edge cloud native container storage. These services are available in 18 global Equinix Metal metros.
Spectra Logic and OpenDrives partner on high performance primary storage and secondary storage solutions. Astera Labs announces CXL 2.0 HW for the PCIe Gen 4 bus. Pure Storage partners with Equinix for Equinix Metal offerings.
